This article is about waves, sometimes called "seismic sea waves," that travel through the ocean. For waves that travel through the Earth itself, see Seismic wave. 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, An aerial view of damage in the Sendai region with black smoke coming from the Nippon Oil Sendai oil refineryA tsunami (plural: tsunamis or tsunami; from Japanese: ??, lit. "harbor wave";[1] English pronunciation: tsu?'n??mi[2]) , also known as a seismic sea wave, is a series of waves in a water body caused by the displacement of a large volume of water, generally in an ocean or a large lake. Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and other underwater explosions (including detonations of underwater nuclear devices), landslides, glacier calvings, meteorite impacts and other disturbances above or below water all have the potential to generate a tsunami.[3] In being generated by the displacement of water, a tsunami contrasts both with a normal ocean wave generated by wind and with tides, which are generated by the gravitational pull of the Moon and the Sun on bodies of water.Tsunami waves do not resemble normal sea waves, because their wavelength is far longer. Rather than appearing as a breaking wave, a tsunami may instead initially resemble a rapidly rising tide, and for this reason they are often referred to as tidal waves, although this usage is not favored by the scientific community because tsunamis are not tidal in nature. Tsunamis generally consist of a series of waves with periods ranging from minutes to hours, arriving in a so-called "wave train".[4] Wave heights of tens of meters can be generated by large events. Although the impact of tsunamis is limited to coastal areas, their destructive power can be enormous and they can affect entire ocean basins; the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami was among the deadliest natural disasters in human history with at least 230,000 people killed or missing in 14 countries bordering the Indian Ocean. The Greek historian Thucydides suggested in his late-5th century BC History of the Peloponnesian War, that tsunamis were related to submarine earthquakes,[5][6] but the understanding of a tsunami's nature remained slim until the 20th century and much remains unknown. Major areas of current research include trying to determine why some large earthquakes do not generate tsunamis while other smaller ones do; trying to accurately forecast the passage of tsunamis across the oceans; and also to forecast how tsunami waves would interact with specific shorelines. Dropping a Camera down a 1,000ft hole! Into the depths of the Deepest ...

"Deepest Hole in the World" revealed, filmed near dugway military base in the Utah desert. Filmed the morning of July 4, 2013 (the camera time stamp was incorrect). 2:40 Hit bottom 3:19 Rock dropped in hole while the camera sits on the bottom of the hole 6:45 Rock dropped in hole while the camera is halfway down the hole 10:18 We walk away from the hole with the line, showing how far down it wasSee the original hole drop video here: http:www.youtube.comwatch?v=ILDD9vyNeN0Watch us shoot a rifle down the pipe here: https:www.youtube.comwatch?v=XmEnAB2YzQ4We have no explanation for the lack of objects at the bottom... we have dropped countless rocks, bullets, fireworks, and other stuff down there. Where did it go? Also, seems to me there were some strange albeit faint sounds down there...Our rig consisted of: a mini keychain spy camera, an LED flashlight, Styrofoam (for both padding and floatation, in case we hit water), a pencil (to protect the lens from rock strikes), fishing line, and a power drill (to reel the line back in).

Close clear air lightning bolt! Darwin Australia

http:www.ntwildscapes.com http:www.youtube.comwillz75This massive clear air bolt (cloud-to-ground lightning bolt) hit about 200-250m away from our location. Here in Darwin, Australia these bolts can leap 15-20km away from the main storm striking a dry area surrounding the storm. You don't see me in the frame for good reason as I was in my car! :P :O A photo was captured using a Canon 1DMark IV and lightning trigger made by Stepping Stone Products, LLC - http:www.lightningtrigger.comPhoto can be seen here: http:www.flickr.comphotoswillz0r5289990107The bolt hits near the base of the tree as a large puff of dust can be seen after the initial strike! Thanks to Jacci for providing some foreground entertainment! :D

Zambian Bungee Jump Swing http:www.youtube.comwatch?v=4-w3oM85bEETyphoon in Taiwan http:www.youtube.comwatch?v=af18k5AwOqQJapanese Swinging Fire Festival http:www.youtube.comwatch?v=jLarkSC3sQY -----The closest to death I've ever been - Devil's Pool at the top of Victoria Falls, Livingstone, Zambia. January 2, 2010.The spot we're all sitting in is called Devil's Pool, hence the video name. To reach it, we first took a small boat to Livingstone island: a tiny island near the edge of Victoria Falls. We then swam across the top of the falls for about 20 minutes, stopping every few meters to swim directly up stream because the current would drag us closer to the edge as we tried to swim perpendicular. The three black men (the two sitting on either side and the third holding my camera) were the guides we hired through our hotel (the Zambezi Sun) and some of the bravest souls I've ever met. I can't remember exactly how much but I think it was $50 each, and well worth the investment. There were other locals who would take us for less, but inexperienced guides get tourists killed, which had happened the week. The guides knew exactly where to swim across the top of the falls, stop to rest, and swim up stream. One of them even carried one of the girls on his back when she had a panic attack while swimming across the falls. Most importantly, as you can see in the video, a guide sat on each side of the group to make sure we didn't wander out of the safe area (well safe-ish). There's a small underwater rock ridge which we leaned against to stop us from spilling over. That being said, fouling around will still get you killed, as I almost learned when I tried leaning over the falls to snap a self-portrait. I felt the water rush and my legs, which were planted to the floor, swing up with the current. I quickly decided I could live without a self-portrait. The third guide, the one who took the incredible footage with my camera, actually stood on the tiny rock ridge, leaning over to capture the precipitous drop and, yes, the double rainbow. Inconceivably stunning! He could have died with the smallest slip! And these guys do this every day. They were all tipped well. TJ from Toronto, CAN
